Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (PS4)

There's just not enough couch co-op games out there. Let alone adventure or horror co-op games. Most games now are single player only or online multiplayer. Local co-op games are rare these days and it's a real shame. I mostly play single player games and although I enjoy immersing myself into a game alone sometimes it's really fun to share a game experience with a good friend. Like Resident Evil 5 and 6 before, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has that option and it was one of the main reasons I got this game.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was originally released as an episodic game story with four episodes. I bought the game after all four episodes had been released. The game is set between the events of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 and features Claire Redfield and Barry Burton as the main protagonists. Each of them has partner that a second player can control. The sad part is that while the game features split screen co-op, the sidekick in the game is not as fun to play as the main character.

In RE 5 and 6 both players were more or less equal in terms of abilities and could use the same kind of weapons but here the second player is more of a support type. Finding ammo and alternate paths is one of their main tasks. If you play alone you can switch between characters and if you play with a friend you'll probably be switching as well because playing the sidekick might get boring. On the other hand the sidekicks job fits well if you're playing with someone who's not that familiar with video games but still wants to play instead of just watching. You never know, maybe you'll recruit a new gamer in the process.

If you can't tell by now, I'm not entirely content with the co-op of this game. However, if we put the bad things aside and focus on the good. The game is in many ways similar to RE 6. It looks and plays pretty much the same although visually it has been upgraded since it's on the PS4 now. Compared to other games however it doesn't really hold up in that department. The reason I play these games, aside from the co-op, is that I like the whole Resident Evil universe, the cheesy dialog and the monsters. Even if it is labeled as a horror game it's not too scary in my opinion. It can get intense. Particularly in moments when you don't have enough bullets and the monsters just keep coming.

This game gets and A for effort for including co-op. Although it's not the best you could ask for, it works and the game is still fun to play. It apparently also has two different endings depending on the choices you make in the game. I guess I got the good ending.
