Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PS4)

I'm a big fan of adventure games. And nothing embodies cinematic adventure games better than the Uncharted series. In the previous installments of the game series the guys at Naught Dog have crafted magnificent adventures combining interesting stories and likable characters with fun and exciting gameplay. On top of that, the Uncharted games have visually always been one of the best looking games on the market. Uncharted 4: Thief's End continues this legacy, bringing more emotional engagement and grander scale to the series without losing the sense of adventure that we know and love. If this really is the last game in the series, Nathan Drake and the rest of the cast will be remembered as one of the best game characters of all time.

Compared to the previous games, Thief's End is both bigger and longer. It looks incredibly good and with a voice cast made up of Nolan North and Troy Baker, the characters and voice acting is stellar. It should come as no surprise that Naughty Dog has learned a lot from their success with The Last of Us and there is a little bit of the same feeling in Uncharted 4.

The game's environments are really made for exploring. Straying from the given path is encouraged and exploring pays off. There are small treasures and journal notes to find scattered around the world and exploring also opens up new dialogs between characters. Just like in The Last of Us, these small intimate moments are often the most memorable.

The biggest changes to gameplay is probably the ability to mark enemies and then silently take them out one by one. You could say that this takes away from the otherwise quite cinematic experience but it makes sense from gameplay perspective, making enemy encounters more interesting and stealth a more viable and perhaps preferable option.

Even though I think Thief's End is a great game I wouldn't necessarily say it is the best of the four. It takes everything that was good about the earlier games and refines it to the max. It also ties all four games together beautifully with a story that engages you and characters that will make you laugh and cry. So instead of choosing which game is the best one, I choose to see all four of them as part of a bigger story. And anyone interested in a great adventure story should play Uncharted.

9/10
