Rise of The Tomb Raider (PS4)

Oh how I have waited for this game to come out on the Playstation 4. First released as a Xbox One exclusive the rest of us have almost waited one additional year to get to play Rise of The Tomb Raider, the highly anticipated sequel to Tomb Raider (2013) and actually the tenth Tomb Raider game. Yes, Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise celebrates it's 20th year anniversary this year. The first game came out on the original Playstation way back in 1996 and since then over 45 million Tomb Raider games have been sold worldwide.

Lara Croft is probably one of the most known and highly recognizable characters in video game history and the Tomb Raider games have successfully redefined the adventure genre. With the last two games, Rise of The Tomb Raider included, there has been a reboot of the series that has focused on how Lara Croft became the famous Tomb Raider we all know.

With the reboot the developers have focused on a more realistic and cinematic experience much like the Uncharted series. Despite their similarities Rise of the Tomb Raider is different in some aspects. For example it has a semi open world to explore. Meaning you can fast travel between different locations once you've discovered them. It also has customizable weapons and you level up and gain new abilities as you progress. When it comes to gameplay, the core mechanics are platforming, stealth and shooting.

They've also dialed down on the overly sexualized appearance of the character and Lara is no longer running around in short shorts and a tank top. Don't get me wrong, she's still hot but more in like a cool, smart and sexy kind of way. But if you're going for realistic I guess running around in shorts in Siberia doesn't make much sense. Overall Lara is now a more fleshed out, complex and believable character.

In this game Lara is already a full fledged adventurer when she goes on a journey to find the legendary city of Kitezh. It lies somewhere in Siberia and within it the mysterious Source that promises immortality. But she is not the only one set to find the lost city. A mysterious group called Trinity is also looking for the Source but for totally different reasons. This leads Lara into an adventure that will test her every skill to the limit. From surviving in the cold wilderness of Northern Russia, to deciphering ancient scripts and solving puzzles all while fighting the evil organization that wants to use the power of the Source for evil.

Rise of The Tomb Raider takes everything that made Tomb Raider (2013) great and improves on it. The snowy mountain peaks and landscapes around Siberia look spectacular and you can almost feel the cold wind on your skin. The game is an intense action adventure experience that you don't want to end. On top of that, the optional challenge tombs offers some brain teasing puzzles and the Blood Ties DLC, included in the 20 Year Celebration Edition, tells the untold story about Lara's mother. I'm sitting here trying to come up with bad things about the game but actually nothing comes to mind.

9/10
