The Evil Within (PS4)

The similarity with Resident Evil is so great you could mistake The Evil Within with just another entry in the RE series. That is of course not a bad thing at all for anyone who can't get enough of survival horror games.

The reason for the resemblance can be explained by revealing that the Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is also the director behind The Evil Within. While borrowing a lot of elements from RE games The Evil Within still finds ways to surprise you. The survival horror gameplay is much more prominent here than in RE 5 & 6 in which horror was mostly exchanged for more action. In the Evil Within you use the environment, stealth, melee combat, firearms and bombs to survive.

I would also argue that The Evil Within is a more challenging game than Resident Evil so be prepared to die, a lot. It's also a survival horror game in the true sense which means ammo and resources are scarce, enemies are tough and bosses are even tougher. However, as you level up your skill set, your ability to defeat enemies gets easier and more fun.

The Evil Within was released to both new and old generation consoles and in my opinion the PS4 version looks more like a remastered PS3 version than a true new generation game. Although what it lacks visually it makes up with great atmosphere and exciting and intense gameplay.

In the game you play as detective Sebastian Castellanos who after investigating a gruesome murder at a mental hospital is thrown into a unreal and nightmarish world full of horrible creatures. Surviving there turns out to be quite the challenge and while you fight your way through you slowly uncover the true story behind this nightmare.
