Heavy Rain & Beyond: Two Souls (PS4)

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls were two of the games I missed when they first came out. When the remastered versions for Playstation 4 came out I bought the bundle for 15 €. Since both games are somewhat similar and made by the same team, Quantic Dream and David Cage, this review features both.

Heavy Rain first came out to PS3 in 2010 and was a critical and commercial success. At the time there was no game quite like it. Seven years later I can say that it still manages to impress. The visuals, though updated, are not quite as good as todays games but the story is intriguing, dark and exciting.

The game is an interactive drama thriller where you play several different characters, interact with highlighted items on the screen and use quick time events during action sequences. The actions and decisions you make will impact the rest of the story as well as the ending. I can warn you that it's quite difficult to get a "happy" ending is this game.

Beyond: Two Souls came out in 2013 and did not receive as much critical acclaim as Heavy Rain. It received mostly mixed reviews and that was one reason I felt a little unwilling to play it at first. I have learned now that you should not trust reviews too much and just play the game and then make up your mind.

Beyond: Two Souls looks truly amazing and the acting by Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe is top notch. I understand that the game does not appeal to everyone since the line between video game and movie in this game is truly blurred. It's a true interactive drama-adventure where the gameplay is not so much based on the skill of the player but by the choices you make.

For casual gamers or even non gamers who are looking for interesting interactive story driven games I really recommend playing these two games. If you have already played these games and you liked them, look forward to Detroit: Become Human coming out in 2018.

The bundle for PS4 is well worth the 15 € I spent and I would pay as much as 30 €.
