Resident Evil 4

I have enjoyed playing the last two Resident Evil (5 and 6) games so much that I had to go back and play some older Resident Evil games (that I've missed) as well. Resident Evil 4 to be precise. Said to be the best game in the franchise and one of the most influential games of 2000's for redefining the third-person shooter genre. It was originally released in 2005 for Nintendo GameCube and later for Playstation 2 and Nintendo Wii. Now there is also a HD version in the PS store and that is the version I have played.

In this game you play as Leon S. Kennedy who is sent to Spain to rescue the presidents daughter Ashley Graham who has been kidnapped by a cult called "Los Illuminados". There he encounters a lot of hostiles that have been infected by a mind-controlling parasite known as Las Plagas. Basically just a lot of regular bad guys coming at you with pitchforks and stuff and then some other not so regular bad guys that require a little more effort to kill and then there are scary-ass shit non-regular bad guys that come at you with chainsaws and creatures that regenerate unless you shoot them in exactly the right spot on their body and these guys are not the ones you want to hang around with for long. Then there are of course the fancy dressed bad guys that keep chanting the same stuff over and over again hoping to annoy you to death I guess. Occasionally another female character, Ada Wong, drops in during the game looking all cool, talking all smooth and totally dismissing Leon who is just completely in love with her. She also has her own game story called "Separate ways" that you can play once you've finished the game.

Resident Evil is not a new game by any means and the graphics does not necessarily meet up with todays standards. It's very dark and grey and even though this is said to be a "HD" remake the textures are pretty bad. All though the camera and controls were almost revolutionary back when this game came out it takes some getting used to as you can't control the camera and move the character the same way you do in modern games. That can be a little frustrating at first but once you get it, you'll do fine.

I started with the bad stuff this time but let's continue with the good stuff. And there are plenty of good stuff about Resident Evil 4. Like the last two RE games it's very fun, challenging and does not get boring due to varied gameplay and game mechanics. Shooting zombies, overcoming bosses, collecting treasures, solving puzzles, buying and upgrading weapons all feels fun and rewarding. Sometimes it's creepy and sometimes it's goofy but overall entertaining. RE4 also makes good use of sound so you know what kind of enemies to expect and how to prepare yourself what is coming.

Resident Evil does not have co-op like the last two games which is a shame. You have to take care of one non playable character (Ashley) at times though and she tends to get killed a lot which can be quite annoying.

If you're into the Resident Evil franchise and haven't played RE4 you should definitely give it a try.

8.5/10
