5 Video Game Sequels That Are Better Than The Original
Sequels are always a hot topic. Both when it comes to movies and to video games. Many sequels fail because it’s almost impossible to top the original. The expectations are also much higher.
But once in a super blood wolf moon sequels gets it right and even end up being better than the original. This seems to happens more often in video games than in movies. It seems like the developers often learn from their previous mistakes and build on the ideas that worked. Here are some of examples of games where the sequel is better than the original.
Whatever your opinions of the ending in the third installment in the series. The Mass Effect Trilogy is a must play. The first Mass Effect did a good job setting up the story, introducing the characters and building the world. However, some of the gameplay felt monotone and repetitive. Mass Effect 2 improved on almost everything and is in my opinion one of the best games ever made. The story is epic in every sense and combat is intense. The loyalty missions for your space crew were some of the best moments of the game.
Just like Mass Effect 2, Uncharted 2 improved on everything the first game introduced. Bringing more characters and locations to life while staying true to the concept. The gameplay and flow also feels much more fluid.
My opinion is somewhat based on the fact that AC2 was the first Assassin’s Creed game I played. However, the consensus among fans seem to be the same. Assassin’s Creed 2 is the best in series. Period.
The first one introduced the parkour mechanic that was pretty much unheard of at the time, but the gameplay was a bit boring and repetitive. Altair the main protagonist was cool but a bit of a mystery man. He didn’t talk too much. The game sparked a whole lot of sequels though and is at this time one of the most popular game series.
Expectations were high when the original Watch Dogs was released. But many were disappointed. Part GTA, part Assassin’s Creed but not as good. Being a hacker was not as exciting as it seemed. Although I liked the darker story in the original I can’t deny that Watch Dogs 2 is just more fun. When it came out it felt new, fresh and managed to separate itself from the original and other similar games.
I haven’t played the first one but I’m confident to say that The Witcher 3 is better than both Witcher 1 and Witcher 2. In fact it is probably safe to say that it is one of the best games ever. Why? Well, you can read my whole review if you want the whole story. But let’s just say it’s the sum of its parts that just comes together perfectly. The game can be overwhelmingly large but still you want to soak up everything and it does not feel like a chore.
It also grows on you. In the beginning I found potions and concoctions confusing and I didn’t understand Gwent. But by the end I played Gwent like a madman just to get all available cards. The game is also unpredictable, harsh and unforgiving. You have to make hard choices and live with the consequences. And above all, it’s memorable. There are scenes and moments in the game that I think about to this day and I still get goosebumps.
