Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (PS4)

After years of following the same formula, the developers of Resident Evil series decided to switch things up and the seventh game became the first to be played from a first person perspective. Besides that they decided to go full on horror, straying from the the last few entries which were more action oriented. Horror has now come home.

As a long time fan of the series I wasn't sure if I was going to like this new perspective of Resident Evil. I was afraid it wasn't going to feel like a Resident Evil game. Fortunately I was wrong. Even played from a first person perspective and with a new character this definitely feels like Resident Evil. The switch to first person also means getting more up close with your enemies which surely adds to the horror factor. The whole game can also be played in Playstation VR but I haven't had the chance to do that yet.

In the past the visuals in RE games have always been a bit underwhelming. Not too bad but never as good as other contemporary games. This time with HDR support Resident Evil looks absolutely fantastic. I would say it is one of the most realistic looking games I've played so far. Walking alone in a dark and damp basement corridor the texture and wetness of the walls looks incredible. The "out of focus" appearance of the weapon your carrying is subtle but really adds to the realistic look of the game.

Although the game ties in to the overall story arc of the Resident Evil franchise eventually, it's more of a standalone experience. In the game you play as Ethan who goes searching for his missing wife Mia. He ends up at an old abandoned house in backwoods Louisiana and finds the horrible secrets of his wife disappearance.

Resident Evil 7 succeeds in bringing an interesting horror story to life and delivers an exciting experience filled with mysteries, puzzles and nasty creatures. During the 10 hours it took to complete the campaign there was never a dull moment. Boss fight were hard but not too hard (on normal) and ammo was scarce but not too scarce, that is, if you loot everything you possibly can.

I missed local co-op and I hope Capcom has not forgotten all about that and that they hopefully will include it in up-coming games. Other than that, Resident Evil is a really good game if you're not easily frightened and have 10 hours and 20 euros to spare.

8.5/10

PS. Screenshots tend to get at bit dark in HDR.
