Soma (PS4)

Soma is a first-person horror mystery game that isn't just a great game. It also explores a few of the biggest questions in both philosophy and science. Questions that still remain fairly unanswered. What is consciousness? What does it mean to be conscious and how can we know that we are real, that other people around us are real and that the world we inhabit is in fact, real. The game also questions things like what makes a person, a person.

The quick backstory of Soma is that 100 years in the future, consciousness can be digitalized and inserted into a machine. The machine itself doesn't know it's a machine but instead acts, feels and thinks that he is a person despite his obvious mechanical exterior. I won't go too much more into the story because that might spoil it.

The game itself could be said to be part Bioshock and part Alien Isolation but it still manages to be unique in it's own way. There is quite a lot of exploration and one of the strengths of the game is that it manages to be interesting even if there's not that much action. Soma focuses a lot on storytelling.  However, when there is action, it's very intense. I had to take regular breaks because I couldn't handle the suspense.

There is no fighting in the game. You're only survival strategy is hiding or staying away from danger. There's this one "monster" you're not supposed to look directly at so when it starts chasing you, you  try to find a secluded place and then sit there in a corner staring at the wall hoping that he is gone by the time you build up enough courage to turn around.

The game itself looks great, has a great atmosphere, beautiful music and good sound design. I can definitely recommend you play it using headphones, that will add a lot to the immersion. Overall I think Soma is a great game, with an interesting story and powerful ending. A game that makes you think long after you stopped playing. Below is a video you should watch after finishing the game explaining much more than I ever could, what's really going on in Soma.

9/10
