The Walking Dead - Video Game

Most people will probably have a clear idea on how they would act and behave in a given situation. People also tend to judge the decisions people make in movies and TV shows, but when you're actually put to the test how would YOU act?

With Telltale Games series The Walking Dead you ARE literally put to the test. In this game your decisions  impact on how the story unfolds. So you have to make your decisions carefully. For example, how do you chose who you save or who you let die, would you cut an arm or a leg of to survive another day and how far would you go to save the ones you love and care about. The Walking Dead is an emotional roller coaster full of moral choices and I would not blame you if you turn in to an emotional wreck after playing it.

The Walking Dead is not a traditional game and that is also where much of it's strengths lie. It is not only a game but more of an interactive graphic novel. Instead of relying on gameplay it is more focused on character development and decision making. The Walking Dead is hands down the most thought-provoking, emotional gaming experience I've had in a long time (perhaps ever) Truly a masterpiece in gaming and a new milestone showing what games are capable of in terms of interactive storytelling (more games like this, please!)

The story is divided into five episodes and starts out with you, the main character Lee, riding in the back of a police car. It is not apparent what you have done but your backstory slowly evolves through the game. The police car crashes and the police officer is killed and you get sort of a "get out of jail free" card. The bad part is that the whole world has gone to shit as the streets are full of dead guys walking. Still, you get the chance to start out with clean slate you might say. You come across this little girl, Clementine, who is all alone and you decide to take care of her.  From that moment on, you stay together and just try to survive another day.

To make the best out of the experience you will have to really let yourself get sucked into the game. You have to think that the decisions you are making are real decisions that impact other people. For me that is not a problem as I tend to take video games dead seriously. So, after playing the game for a while I actually cared for Clementine so much I would do almost anything to keep her safe. Every situation I tried to think of her and I did not want anything bad to happen to her.  If you get immersed in the game, the story and the characters you might found out something about yourself. And if not, you still will have a great experience.

Even if you usually don't play games, or even if you don't like zombies (couldn't see how anyone could not like zombies but..) would strongly recommend trying this game. The controls are intuitive and you can even get the game to your PC, Mac or iPhone and iPad. The five episodes cost about 15 euros and that will get you about 10-12 hours of gameplay.  I played this game on my iPad and besides from a few moments when the controls felt a little unresponsive and clunky this is the kind of games that the iPad is made for. Also the first episode is free so try it out! You don't have anything to lose. And speaking of winning and losing The Walking Dead has won over 90 Game of the Year awards which pretty much speaks for itself.

My Rating 10/10
