Uncharted 2 and 3

The Uncharted game series is the missing link between Hollywood blockbusters and video games. It's really hard to tell if you are actually playing a game or starring as the lead character in a movie. Growing up watching Indiana Jones movies, all I wanted to do as a kid was to be like him. You know...go on adventures, search for treasures, kill the bad guys, get the beautiful girl (okay, maybe that came a little later on, but you get the point). Anyway... I'm not saying, playing Uncharted is the same thing as going on a real Indiana Jones adventure, but I would say it's pretty close.

First of all I have to admit, I have not played the first Uncharted game. I heard it was just as good as the other but of course the gameplay and graphics has probably been improved and refined for the newer games. However maybe if I get the chance I will try out that game also. I kind of want to know how the story of Nathan Drake began. Until then I'm going to review the two other games.

Uncharted 2 - Among Thieves

Three words...I loved it! Like I mentioned before, it's like starring in a movie. A real action/adventure movie with guns and treasures and bad guys and shit. And it looks so beautiful as well. Really bright colors and nice lighting, as well as very detailed environment. The voice acting is great and you can really relate to the characters, they're funny and feel authentic. It seems that they have had a lot of fun doing the voice acting and much of it even seems improvised and it makes it even more real. (A little side note, Nathan Drake who is the lead character of the game is voiced by Nolan North who is also the voice behind Desmond Miles from the Assassins Creed games)

The gameplay is basically climbing and jumping, some stealth, shooting bad guys and some puzzle solving. And I would say there's a pretty good balance between them. I would have liked a little more puzzle solving and exploring maybe, because the shooting sometimes get a little repetitive in my opinion. But aside from that there's a good balance between the different gameplays.

The story is great, with some twist and turns so you don't really know what's going to happen or where you're heading next. You also get to go to different places around the world, like Borneo, Tibet, Nepal and Istanbul. And the locations all look amazing. It's a quite a short game though. But even if the play-through is only about 10 hours, I would say it's still worth buying. There is also an online multiplayer mode and if you're like me you'll gladly play it through again after it has been sitting on you're shelf for a while and you are ready again to step in the shoes of Nathan Drake and go on some kick-ass adventures.

Uncharted 3 - Drakes Deception

I got this game for christmas this year and played it during my winter break. This game has gotten really good reviews and it's not all for nothing. This is a really engaging and beautiful game, and it has all of the elements of the last game plus they've added some new things. And it simply looks amazing. It resembles the last game but the story and the locations are of course new. There is a new villain, a new treasure (of course) and you get to travel to e.g. London, Yemen, France, Colombia etc. We also get to dive into Nathan Drake's past and play him as a teenager on his way of becoming an adventurer.

The story, the characters and the gameplay follows the same standards as in the previous game, which means...they're awesome. You've got your epic hidden treasure, nasty villain, funny dialogues, gun blazing, mystery, jumping and climbing, puzzle solving and a little romance. The game is as long as Uncharted 2, about 10 hours but it also has Multiplayer and a Co-op mode, so I would not say that it matters that much. It is often better that a game is on the shorter side than including a bunch of stuff just to make it longer.

Like I said, the game looks amazing, and not just that. The environment is so much more vivid and realistic than in the previous game. (even though it was amazing in Uncharted 2) Some moments in the game really sticks out. I'm talking about the burning chateau in France, the storm in the desert and the cruise ship. These were the moments when you really realized that this is a great game. A game in which the developers really have poured their heart and soul into making one of the best games to date.
