Spider-Man (PS4)

I just finished the Playstation exclusive Spider-Man and I have some mixed feelings about the game. I think it is nothing short from a technical marvel with its fluid traversal and combat, amazing visuals and atmospheric music. This demanded great power from my PS4 because it seemed that the fan was always in full gear whenever I played this game.

Although Spider-Man is an impressive game, it is a bit un-inspiring. While it is similar to the Batman Arkham series, it didn’t offer the same immersion. The combat is really cool and when you learn all the moves and acquire gadgets, each combat encounter is an exciting experience. I also found the mini games in the lab to be oddly compelling and I could not wait for more of them to be accessible.

The story is told in a cinematic fashion and many of the big story points are little more than quick time events. I don’t mind this since there is lots of times where you get to use your combat and gadget skills instead. Boss fights were not that great. They somehow seemed to be both too easy and to hard at the same time. You start out not knowing what to do and then you somehow defeat the boss without even trying. It was weird but maybe it was just me.

The game world is a detailed construction of New York city but after a while it all starts to look the same. Other repetitive traits of the game (that Arkham also had) is stopping crimes. It is fun at first, but it gets tedious in the end. Far more enjoyable and challenging are the faction outposts where you must defeat waves of enemies.

Like I said, visually it is truly impressive with naturally looking faces and animations and I have nothing bad to say about the voice acting and dialog which was very funny at times. And loading screens when you use fast travel are the best.

I guess the biggest problem with Spider-Man is that it is just more of the same. And for someone who plays a lot of games you notice this. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, you could say the same about a lot of games. It’s still a fun game with exciting combat and a good story. Paid 24 euros and it is worth it.
