Assassin's Creed Origins (PS4)

After a two year break Assassin's Creed is back with a brand new game, Assassin's Creed Origins. There was of course the movie that came out in between games but it was a disappointment in my mind and did not really represent the Assassin's Creed I know and love. AC Origins, however, might be the best in the series since AC II.

Set in Ancient Egypt in the year circa 50 BCE, the player takes the role of Bayek of Siwa, a protector of the people and a former Medjay to the Pharaoh. On a journey of vengence and caught in the middle of the civil war between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy, Bayek and his wife Aya fight to protect the freedom of the people against the Order.

As the name Origins implies, the game goes back to explore the beginning of the Assassin Brotherhood and how it came to be what it is today. After spending time in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the French and Industrial Revolution, Ancient Egypt is the perfect setting to go to. It's fresh, exciting and a great reboot for the series.

The world that they've built for this game is absolutely amazing. It's so big, beautiful and alive. If it weren't for the map you could seriously get lost in it. The close combat system has gotten a full remake and is more challenging than before. The loot system has been improved and there is now more incentive to loot chests and enemies since they both contain valuable weapons and shields. Keeping your character well equipped and well skilled is crucial for survival as the enemies get tougher the more you progress.

Horses are back in Origins and there's also motion capped camels! Both are very useful for getting around in the world and they can also be used to your advantage in combat. Parkour is more fluid than ever and there are plenty of things to climb. Pyramids!!

I like that there are plenty of things that the game doesn't explicitly tell you to do. You have to discover them for yourself. I'm not going to spoil anything but exploring and trying stuff out pays off in unexpected ways. Small details in the game like that show that the developers are passionate about it and care about the player's experience.

The main story is engaging enough to keep you playing until the end but the world itself lures you into doing so much else that your focus on the main quest sometimes suffer. Side quests and side activities are better designed than before and will keep you busy for dozens of hours. My play-through including most activities and side missions took about 80 hours but I was in no hurry.

What has always fascinated me with Assassin's Creed is the blending of history and fiction. In Origins you meet historic characters such as Cleopatra and Caesar and get to relive important moments in history, explore tombs and learn about the lives and the rituals of people in ancient Egypt.

There's a lot more I could talk about when it comes to this game but it's better to just play it. The game is well worth the price of a new game, 60 €. Assassins's Creed is back with a bang.
