Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series (PS4)

It's easy to think that making a video game based on such an immensely popular TV-show and book series as Game of Thrones would be nothing more than a cash grab. Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series, however, is actually a great complement to the series since it is set in the original storyline but avoids meddling too much in it and instead introduces it's own characters and story. I think this kind of spinoff concept when done right is great since you get to see more of the world of Westeros and the people who live in it.

In the game you are introduced to a new noble family in the north, House Forrester, and during the six episodes you are going to play four different characters and one servant from this family. Bringing interesting characters to life has definitely been Telltale's strong suit in the past and the same goes for this game. Just after one episode there are already a bunch of characters you care about and want to get to know more.

The game takes place in the third and fourth season of the TV-show and there are a few familiar characters like Margaery, Ramsay, Cersei, Tyrion and Jon present in the game as well. Although they are non-playable and serve mostly as a supporting cast.

You know nothing

If you have played Telltales other games, like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us you will be very familiar with the gameplay (or lack there of). The gameplay consist mostly of a point and click mechanic to interact with objects or the environment or choosing between dialog options. There are some more action oriented moments where you should react quickly by clicking the right buttons.

From a technical standpoint the game has some issues. Which is very unfortunate since it's otherwise such a great game. The so called quick time events are confusing and could use some real improvement otherwise they just lead to unnecessary and frustrating moments that ruin your immersion. Fortunately I can put this aside since the dialog and story is excellent. In a true Game of Thrones fashion you will get really upset when someone dies, you will get really angry at certain characters and most importantly, YOU will be making all the hard choices yourself.

Being a Game of Thrones fan I went into this game without any preconceptions and I was pleasantly surprised how engaging it was. I made some hard choices in this game but I didn't go back and change anything since I want to suffer the consequences of my actions and see where it gets me. Maybe in another playthrough I can explore different approaches.

In the wait for the new season of Game of Thrones you can play this game. It's available on a wide array of platforms like PS3, PS4, Android, iOS, PC, Mac, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

8.5/10
