Dead Space 3

I want to play a lot of video games, but my budget doesn't allow me to buy a lot of games when they've just come out. The good thing is you can get a lot of games fairly cheap if you just wait a while before you buy. Then there are of course some games you just have to get right away, (like AC Unity that will hopefully drop down my mail box tomorrow) but Dead Space 3 is not one of them. However the 11 euros I paid for it, is money well spent.

The original Dead Space and Dead Space 2 were similar in many ways and I really enjoyed playing them. In my opinion Dead Space 2 even managed to improve on much of that which made the first game good. Dead Space 3 is undeniably a bit different. It has it's scary horror parts and difficult bosses but in an attempt to make the game longer it has more of an open world and is filled with many repetitive enemy encounters and optional missions that feel very similar to each other.

The positive thing about the game is that when it comes to the visuals, Dead Space 3 looks pretty spectacular. You can't hide from the fact that the snowy landscape is mesmerizing and I can't say I have seen much better graphics in many (if any) other game.

The weapon customization has also changed and you now have one or several little scavenger bot friends who will collect scrap parts for you. It's a nice touch to spice up the gameplay a little but ultimately the customization feels a bit over complicated to get your head around and I preferred the system in the earlier games.

Although I know the elevator rides and the door openings are essentially loading screens they can get a bit frustrating. I haven't played another game with as much elevator rides as Dead Space 3. However the game can be very enjoyable if you count out the bad things listed above. There are new enemies that are creepy as hell and will haunt you in your sleep. There are a lot of surprising moments that will  actually have you jump in your seat. And I really enjoyed the puzzle solving elements of the game. Dead Space 3 also feature online co-op, but no split-screen co-op:(

I can't say a lot about the story (although I usually care a lot about story and characters) because I wasn't really paying attention. I was too busy shooting Necromorphs. But in the game you once again play as Isaac Clarke and once again you're up against not only Necromorphs but also other humans.

There may or may not be a new Dead Space game in development, which is either a good or a bad thing as it seems that maybe the story of Isaac Clarke and the alien artifact called the marker should be laid to rest and either go back to the roots or come up with a new game that is equally appealing.

+ Spectacular visuals
+ Fun puzzle-solving
+ Creepy enemies

- Repetitive gameplay
- No split-screen co-op
- A lot of elevator rides

7.5/10
