Days Gone (PS4)

Days Gone is an open-world adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, United States. A virus has killed off or turned most people in to flesh eating monsters. Only a few groups of people are left, just trying to survive in this god forsaken land.

You play as former biker, Deacon St.John, surviving, by any means necessary. In addition to a cool name, Deacon is also a cool guy. He is your typical anti-hero, grumpy and reckless. He drives around on a custom built motorcycle, has never owned a cellphone and he kills zombies for before breakfast.

Oregon is a really neat location for the game and the landscape with its lakes and mountains is beautiful to look at. Despite some weird/bad looking characters, Days Gone is a very good looking game. Photos taken in photo mode are gorgeous

The Freakers (they never call them zombies, do they?) come in different shapes and sizes. The most terrifying of them all, the horde, can consist of up to 500 individual freakers! Most of the freakers come out at night but there are some hanging around at daytime as well. Also beware of wolves and other animals, especially mutated ones can be very dangerous.

When you first dive in to the game, you get a bit of a The Last of Us vibe, but it quickly becomes apparent that this is not a TLOU- clone, it is something else entirely. It's more in the style of Horizon Zero Dawn, but with zombies of course. The game is also much bigger and longer than I first expected. It might take you a while before you level up, get better equipment and really start to enjoy it. When you're all geared up the game becomes really great.

Although it seems there are a lot of zombie games out there, I have never played anything like this. This is one of my favorite to date. It has every component of what I like in a game. It is an open world game but it is not huge. It is also not filled with unnecessary side activities and other content.  Open worlds with too much content often distracts you from the story but Days Gone strikes a good balance in that regard.

I never felt bored playing Days Gone. There are intense moments, like when you face your first horde. Then there are more stealthy segments when you need to take down enemies silently not to be overwhelmed. There is a lot of scavenging for items to craft items but luckily ammo can be bought from vendors. So when you’ve upgraded to better weapons and have a lot of ammo you can blast through a lot of enemies if you want. Different kind of bombs, attractors and traps can also be used very creatively to your advantage.

As a biker the motorcycle is your best friend. You have to take well care of it. It needs gas and maintenance regularly and upgrades are available to purchase at camps. It seems frustrating at first but it adds a nice element of suspension when you run out of gas in the middle of the night and have to go on a search for a fuel canister while zombies..um...Freakers, are lurking around. It would have been nice to upgrade Deacon’s appearance too but sadly that is not possible.

Like I said the game is much longer than I first expected, about 50 hours for the average player. During this time you will experience a story that holds up against any run of the mill Hollywood film. Some voice actors do better than others but the main characters do great job in my opinion.
