Life Is Strange (PS4)

One of the most interesting games that came out last year in 2015, has got to be the graphic adventure game Life Is Strange. It was originally released in an episodic manner periodically throughout 2015 but you can now play the whole season with all five episodes on all major consoles and PC and Mac.

Life Is Strange features the protagonist Max Caulfield, a twelfth grade student at Blackwell Academy, who one day discovers that she can alter time and space. Her seemingly normal life is changed forever and she's now in a race against the clock to save her town from seemingly imminent destruction. She promises to use her ability only to do good but quickly finds out that altering time can have dire consequences.

The game starts out as a high school simulator where you play as the awkward hipster geek and photography student Max. However, it slowly turns into so much more. It is one of those games that manages to draw you in completely in it's world and it's characters. I played all the episodes in the course of a weekend. It's the kind of game where you want to interact with every object and read every single note, and you really should. Not just to find out more of the world and it's characters but as it will actually help you during your play through.

One big part of the gameplay is to interact with other characters and chose the appropriate response. Unlike other games you're also able to rewind time and change your answer should you want to, but then again there might be consequences. That's the part of the game I really like. You're constantly in some doubt whether you made the right choice or not. Life Is Strange also tackles some serious moral dilemmas and will have you, the player, making all the difficult choices. From a research point of view, the results from player choices around the world would make an interesting study.

The way you can hear Max's thoughts as she interacts with objects and characters in her surroundings makes her a really relatable character and you care for her throughout the game. The whole "high school setting" also brings back memories and nostalgia from your own teenage years and the indie soundtrack accompanies the game wonderfully.

8.5/10
