Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 is an action-packed first-person shooter set in a huge open world featuring an epic storyline almost too clichéed to be true. So, don't take it too seriously, hop on for the ride and I'll promise you, you will have a whole lot of fun.

I finally got around playing Far Cry 3, which is the third installment of the Far Cry series (surprise, surprise) The games however don't follow the same storyline or protagonist so even if you haven't played the previous games you will have no problem playing Far Cry 3 even if it is the first game you play in the series.

As I said the story is pretty cliché. You play a white 25(ish) year old dude from L.A. on a tropical island trying to rescue his friends from bad guys. The lead writer of Far Cry 3 has said though, that the story was intentionally written this way and it is meant to be ironical (spoken like a true hipster) but I think many are probably missing the point. However if you think of the story as an ironical satire, I guess it changes some things and the story makes more sense that way. Worth mentioning is also that some of the characters and voice actors give pretty memorable performances (Vaas for example)

Bigger is always better, right? Well in Far Cry 3:s case I would say, it is not. I mean yeah, it's nice when you have a huge beautiful open world to explore but when it all just looks the same, all the time. At first you get excited as you walk through the jungles, fly across open seas or swim in the ocean but then you notice there is not as much variation in the environment as you would like it to be. I just think they could have focused on making a smaller world that feels more natural and one where you could get familiar with certain places instead of making a huge world where every place looks pretty much the same.

Okay, but let's leave the negative energy behind and focus on what makes Far Cry 3 a fun and exciting experience. The missions and the gameplay. In the beginning you are an unexperienced kid who has never fired a weapon and doesn't really know how it is to kill a man. You can actually notice this in your character because in the beginning, shooting and killing is pretty hard and sometimes frustrating. But by earning skill points you get new abilities and by hunting animals and crafting accessories you can carry more weapons and ammunition, which slowly makes playing the game more rewarding. The change in your character comes apparent when in the end of the game you feel more experienced and powerful than ever as your character has turned into a true killing machine. This is the point in the game when you actually feel alive and in control and when you have the most fun.

There is a lot more things I could discuss about Far Cry 3, for example the soundtrack, the boss fights, the acid trip sequences but "ain't nobody got time for that" so just go play it yourself. You're worth it.

My rating 8.5
