Guardians of the Galaxy -The Telltale Series (PS4)

Guardians of the Galaxy is due to legal rights not available to purchase digitally anywhere, so I was glad that I got my hands on a physical copy. The physical copy only includes the first episodes but if you have the disc you can still download the four other episodes.

I have seen the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and The Avengers movies and the game is very true to the movies. The characters look almost identical and their personalities match even though they are not played by the same actors. You play as Peter aka “Star-Lord” Quill, and you can choose a bit how you want to play him, but it mostly follows how Chris Pratt portrayed him in the movies as well.

The Guardians are a bunch of lovable misfits that somehow, despite their differences stay together for the common cause of, well…guarding the galaxy. But when a major threat in the universe has been dealt with, what will keep them together?

It seems destiny has other plans and when one threat is dealt with, another one quickly turns up. Peter now has two things to handle. Keeping the guardians together despite their inner conflicts and the threat of imminent demise. This is one of the player’s main tasks during the game.

Guardians of the Galaxy is an action adventure comedy with some heartwarming moments as well. Comedic timing is on point and I actually laughed out loud a couple of times and that doesn’t happen very often during a game. Voice actors really deliver, especially Drax and Rocket are phenomenal. The game is also very visually appealing, with a nice color scheme and good looking character design.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows the same formula as previous Telltale titles but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The game is still more entertaining than many of the Marvel movies, the stakes are higher the comedic timing is more on point and of course you get to experience the story firsthand, because you are sitting in the drivers seat, you are in control.

There are some major choices that impact the ending but still the last episode is a bit of a disappointment.  It felt more like the illusion of choice than actually having any. I guess it has always been that way with these games, it's just that after a few you start to notice.

I really enjoyed the game and it was entertaining as hell when I played it, but ultimately it is not that memorable. For 13 euros, which is less than a movie ticket, it was worth it though, and for fans of the series I can recommend it.
