Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)

I recently played and reviewed Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, which is a high production value AAA game that is slightly shorter than your average game but also for half the price. It got me thinking that there is plenty of room for these kind of linear, intense and shorter game experiences in a market that is full of open-world games consuming up to hundreds of hours of your time. Not that I don't like open world games that you can escape into for dozens and dozens of hours, but who has got the time if every game released takes 50 hours to beat, especially if you want to play a lot of different games. My point is that since playing video games is not just for kids, adults with full time jobs and/or children don't have the time to play as much as they would like and that's where shorter but highly entertaining games like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy come in.

Technically, Lost Legacy is a standalone expansion to Uncharted 4 but it was also released as a physical copy and it is almost as long and expansive as Uncharted 2. It features Chloe Frazer, who first appeared in Uncharted 2, and her search for the long lost Tusk of Ganesh. Chloe was not in Uncharted 4 so I'm really happy they decided to give her her own storyline and game. Other familiar faces you will see in the game are the ex-mercenary Nadine Ross and Sam Drake.

Fans of the Uncharted series will feel right at home with The Lost Legacy. The gameplay is basically the same as in Uncharted 4, where you can choose between going stealthy or guns blazing. There is also a fair amount of puzzle solving, which I liked. Uncharted, including Lost Legacy, however, is so much more than just it's basic gameplay. It's about the sense of wonder and discovery you feel when playing it and about it's wonderful characters that you can't get enough of. The chemistry between Chloe and Nadine is just as good as that between Nathan and Sully. I just watched the whole crew at the Uncharted 10th Anniversary panel at PSX 2017 and from that you can just imagine how much fun they must have had making the games.

Even though the game would count as a fairly linear game it features a small open world and you can choose in which order you complete some locations. It might feel a bit slow at first but there is some action towards the end which will take you about 10 hours to reach, depending on your play style and if you choose to explore optional treasures and locations.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy might not reinvent the wheel but it is just the type of game I would like to see more of. Shorter, more focused game experiences that delivers quality over quantity to people who love video games but don't have countless hours to spend playing them.

When released the game cost about 40 euros, which is justifiable, but I got the game for 20 euros which is more reasonable and I would go as high as 30 for this game.

8.5/10
