Assassin's Creed Rogue

A bit reluctantly I went into playing AC Rogue, the game that was released for the PS3 at the same time as AC Unity last year. As I heard that it was going to be heavily emphasized on naval gameplay I didn't buy it then. However, as I'm interested in following the Assassin's Creed story I bought it recently and I have now finished the game.

AC Rogue is a bit different from the other games, as you play as a Templar instead of an Assassin. The protagonist is Shay Cormac, a trained assassin turned templar who now hunts down his former assassin brothers as he feels the assassins have lost their way and his values don't coincide with theirs. Both Assassins and Templar want peace ,it is just their means of achieving it that are different. The Assassins strive for freedom and the Templars want order and control.

I would say that the game is a good mix between AC III and Black Flag in terms of game environment and gameplay but it also shares many of the same weaknesses. It's definitely a last gen game and feels like one of the buggiest in the series. Once you've gotten used to the smoother, more fluid gameplay like the one in Syndicate it's hard to go back to this. Comparing the smooth maneuverability of Evie and Jacob with the clumsy control you have over Shay is frustrating to say the least. The lack of a stealth button that has now been implemented since Unity is something you miss from the very start and you feel more like a stab-stab-stabby man than a sneaky Assassin.

However, the Naval gameplay works well and I enjoyed it even more now than in Black Flag. If you manage to put aside these annoying technical issues you find a pretty decent game underneath. I simply could not help to admire the visually appealing landscape of the North Atlantic, the beautifully composed music and the great naval combat. And even if the story missions are fewer than in every other AC game, the game map is huge meaning lots to explore and do on the side.

The verdict is that AC Rogue might be one of the most interesting installment in the series and if it wasn't for all the clumsy technical issues and bugs it could have been one of the strongest games in the series.
