Dying Light

A few years ago when Dead Island came out many thought (based on the awesome trailer) it was going to be the greatest zombie game ever. Once it was released it wasn't all that spectacular. The game was okay but I myself didn't manage to play it all the way through. With Dying Light however, Techland has improved on almost every aspect and the game might very well be the zombie game I've always wanted and really something you can sink your teeth in.

Dying Light resembles Far Cry a lot but there is also zombies, parkour and zombies and...did I mention zombies? (Far Cry with zombies would be awesome btw). It's also one of the best-looking games out there, I mean it is sometimes like really hard to distinguish the scenery from real life footage, it is that good.

Dying Light is a open world FPS set in a fictious city called Harran where an unknown virus has spread out turning people into flesh eating zombies. You play as Kyle Crane, an operative for the GRE who is sent into the quarantine zone to get a hold on some classified documents. However, once inside he quickly make friends with a group of survivors, holding out in a Tower in the middle of the quarantine zone and soon he's original mission don't go according to plan.

The thing that sets Dying Light apart from a traditional FPS is the parkour. In Dying Light you're not confined to just moving along the streets, rooftops are your best friends when you're trying to avoid zombies. Initially I found the parkour a bit frustrating, especially climbing taller structures. From a first person perspective it's hard to see what your doing when your climbing. But once you get more used to it, as well as level up it feels more fluid after a while.

In the beginning of the game you'll avoid every zombie you meet. Not because you're shy but because taking down a zombie with a rusty pipe or a floor plank is definitely not easy. As you progress this changes as you get better weapons and skills to deal with the undead. Pretty soon you'll be hacking and slashing like you were playing Fruit Ninja.

Humor is a natural part of the zombie genre and you will find it in Dying Light also. Especially in the side missions, where you'll encounter all kinds of interesting characters. The side missions are one of the best part of the game and they don't feel like just filler between the main missions. Some of them are really good and I recommend playing them between main missions to gain experience and earn rewards.

No zombie movie or game is complete without a little horror in my opinion. You should really be scared for your life. And here's where night comes in. As the title Dying Light suggests, nighttime is a time you want to stay indoors. Because as soon as the sun goes down, the really scary creatures come out to play and you have to be really careful that they don't spot you...

Dying light is also a multiplayer game. You can join random players games or team up with friends to fight zombies together. Even if multiplayer is not really my cup of tea, this kind of cooperative play is fun, especially with friends.
