Watch Dogs 2 (PS4)

Rockstar Games and the GTA series might still be the king of open world games but with Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft has now become the big contender for the throne. The improvements from the first game are massive and WD 2 delivers one of the best best open world experiences since GTA V.

The game follows the story of a young talented hacker named Marcus Holloway aka retr0, who after being targeted as a threat by the company behind the city's operating system ctOS, joins the hacktivist group called DedSec (familiar for those who played the first game). Like in it's predecessor the hacktivist's see the dangers with an all seeing, all connected ctOS, and decides to recruit more people and together take down the company behind it, Blume.

The game is set in the San Fransisco Bay Area and features some familiar landmarks, like Silicon Valley and the Golden Gate Bridge. You can cruise the city by foot (also light parkour), motorcycle, car or boat. Besides your phone and computer for hacking you have at your disposal a remote controlled car, a Jumper, and Quadcopter drone. You can also make guns using a 3D printer.

The overall tone of the game is much lighter than in the original Watch Dogs. It even might come out a bit silly, as if they're trying too hard to be funny and hip, but I actually think that is the intention. There are interesting characters all around and some really cool missions.

Besides the main story and missions, there are a lot of things to do in the game world. There are car and boat races as well as collectibles. This time around even collecting XP, here called Data Points or Key Data Points is fun as hell. You need to be really creative in how to gain access to them, using your RC Jumper, your Quadcopter or lifts.

There is also Multiplayer mode integrated into the main game so from the to time you get prompted to chase down and neutralize a target or hack someone. Multiplayer missions you can play with friends online are also prominent.

The world looks great and alive and you can easily lose countless hours in the game just exploring or collecting XP or cash. That also means that you sometimes forget about the main story all together, which you really shouldn't. Because it is a quite interesting and important one, a story about our own world and the information we share about ourself online and how it can be used against us.

Btw, I have strong suspicions that Watch Dogs is actually a modern Assassin's Creed game and DedSec is the modern equivalent of the Brotherhood of Assassin's and Blume is full of templars. I have seen this theory show up online and it actually makes a lot of sense. Even though I think Ubisoft already denied it, I want this so much to be true. So if if you like GTA type of games or Assassin's Creed give Watch Dogs 2 a try, you won't regret it.
