The Evil Within 2 (PS4)

The Evil Within 2 continues Sebastian Castellano’s story were the last game ended. In an unexpected plot twist the troubled detective finds out that his daughter is still alive but was kidnapped by an organization called Mobius.  A rogue agent helps Sebastian to go rescue his daughter by going inside the “matrix machine” STEM. Inside STEM the detective finds himself once again trapped in a place filled with horrible creatures and dangerous psychopaths.

While the game’s story is weird (the good kind) and messed up (the good kind?) it actually makes more sense than in the first game.  It’s in the same style as Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 and there is also a hint of The Last of Us in there but don’t except an equally emotionally gripping story.Featuring a semi-open world, you have more freedom to explore than in the first game but the game is still quite linear and the open world does not really add anything except for some independent exploring and quite good side-missions that you should not miss.

As a survival-horror game, a big part of the game is scavenging, crafting ammo and supplies and upgrading weapons and the character. At times it feels that a lot of the playtime goes to this but it’s actually something I enjoy. It feels great to have enough ammo and upgrades when you face your next enemy.

For a horror game, The Evil Within 2 does not feel that scary. Yes there are some creepy and disturbing moments but I’ve played enough Resident Evil that these moments don’t get to me anymore and are sometimes so over the top that they feel more ridiculous than scary. Despite that I like this game; although not that scary it is still intense enough to get your heart raising and really fun to play.

I can’t say that boss fights were that great and enemies are quite dumb. Killing enemies is satisfying though and there is a wide array of weapons to use, including guns, rifles and crossbows and flamethrowers.

Sebastian Castellano is a (intentionally?) clichéd character that says “what the hell” a lot and doesn’t trust anyone. But this is the same style that the Resident Evil games use and it doesn’t bother me. All video games don’t have to take themselves too seriously.

Not quite a full price game but surely a half price game. I Paid 25 euros for it and worth at least 30 euro.
