Mafia II (PS3)

A few weeks back I had a free weekend and I wanted to play something truly immersing. I found Mafia II on the Playstation Store for like 6 or 7 euros and I played through it that weekend. The playthrough took about 12-13 hours.

Mafia II is a highly story driven open world game set in the 40's and 50's America. Vito Scaletto is a war veteran who becomes caught up with the Mafia and is sucked in to a life of crime and violence. But the world of the Mafia is unforgiving and cruel, who can you really trust?

The game's greatest strength is in it's story. It manages to suck you in to the Mafia world with believable characters and enticing missions with powerful plot twists. The ending in particular is an example of excellent writing.

Compared to modern games Mafia II feels outdated, which should come as no surprise, it was released six years ago. The open world feels quite empty and there aren't really any side missions or incentive to explore apart from finding collectibles or paying a trip to Brusky's scrapyard to crunch cars. Gameplay consists of driving, duck and cover shoot-outs and hand to hand combat. The unnecessary driving from place A to B is a bit off-putting especially since the driving is not that great but shoot-outs and combat is decent.

There are some similarities between Mafia II and La Noire, like the time period for example, but the world of Mafia II feels dull compared La Noire's, not to mention more modern games like GTA V. There is no doubt however that despite it's flaws Mafia II delivers one of the better stories I've experienced and some really great missions.

7.5/10
