Outlast (PS4)

Scariest game I've ever played? It's actually the scariest thing I've experienced in a long time (and even having fun in the process).

Outlast is a survival horror game that actually is a survival horror game. It is all about surviving. You play as an investigating reporter going to a Mental Asylum to investigate the strange happenings there. Quite obviously, you are going to experience something very strange and very scary.

The only equipment you have with you is your video camera and it's night vision. You will encounter some nasty enemies and the only way to survive is to either hide or run. You can't fight them. Relying on the night vision and the dark environment is your only chance to survive. The twist is, that the night vision on your camera drains battery, so you have to used it very sparingly, and it can get pretty dark in there.

I have to point out that there are some very perfectly timed scares in Outlast, scares that will have your heart pounding and the hairs on you arm standing up. However the most scary thing of all is the sense of helplessness you're feeling as you play it. Constantly running and hiding never knowing if (or when) you're going to get caught or found is nerve-racking. Also navigating in the dark without any map to guide you (and enemies walking all around the place) will have you making up elaborate strategies to find your way through the asylum.

I haven't really played a game like Outlast before and I was pleasantly surprised. It is genuinely scary (although you get a bit used to it after a while) and as a game it is very immersive and fun as your constantly on the edge. If you are not easily scared, Outlast is best played in a dark room with headphones on, but if you are, play it in a well lit room in the company of a friend, a cat or at least a pillow.
