RoboCop: Rogue City (PS5) - Review
Part man, part machine, all nostalgia.
Let’s face it—I’m an 80s kid. I grew up on the golden age of sci-fi and action adventure classics like Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, and The Terminator. RoboCop was always part of that mix. It may not have been my all-time favorite, but it was undeniably cool with its gritty violence, satirical edge, and unforgettable one-liners.
To get in the mood for RoboCop: Rogue City, I rewatched all three original movies plus the 2014 reboot. The first film still holds up as a classic, of course—but honestly, I don’t think RoboCop 2 and 3 deserve all the hate they get. They’re flawed but still have their charm. The reboot is fine, it's just a different beast—slicker, more serious, and lacking that weird 80s magic.
The game RoboCop: Rogue City is a straightforward first-person shooter with some light RPG and investigation elements sprinkled on top. What it does best is capturing the vibe of the original RoboCop movies — gritty, satirical, and retro-futuristic. It even features the voice of Peter Weller, the original RoboCop himself, which goes a long way in making the whole thing feel authentic.
Gunplay is satisfying, with punchy weapons that really sell the feeling of being a walking tank. Walking through doors and blasting criminals as RoboCop feels exactly like it should. But the gameplay loop can get a bit repetitive. The missions mostly boil down to moving from one area to the next and clearing out enemies. It’s not a long game, but even then, it could have been shorter. Personally, I would have liked more detective and investigation work on top of combat.
Without spoiling too much, the first boss fight is also worth mentioning — not because it’s great, but because of how absurd it is. You unload an entire warehouse worth of bullets into a bullet sponge enemy, and it still keeps going. The difficulty spike is jarring, especially after a relatively easy start. So, yeah could have been a little bit more balanced.
RoboCop: Rogue City feels like a game from another era—in both good and bad ways. The visuals are surprisingly strong, and the gunplay is satisfying with that retro vibe, which perfectly captures the RoboCop essence. However, the game design feels a bit dated, and it tends to overstay its welcome without offering enough compelling reasons to keep playing. While the gameplay is fun, it lacks the depth and variety you'd expect from modern titles.
That said, if you’re a fan of RoboCop or just want a straightforward shooter with a nostalgic kick, Rogue City is worth checking out.
Final Rating: 7.5/10
Pros:
- Nails the classic RoboCop tone and atmosphere
- Peter Weller’s voice acting adds authenticity
- Punchy, satisfying gunplay
- Repetitive mission design
- Unbalanced difficulty spikes
- Feels a bit too long for its own good
Bottom line
RoboCop: Rogue City is a lovingly crafted tribute to a cult classic, delivering satisfying gunplay, strong visuals, and a healthy dose of 80s nostalgia. Unfortunately, it’s also weighed down by dated game design and repetitive missions. For longtime fans, it’s an entertaining blast from the past. For everyone else, it’s a decent weekend shooter.
